SUBC 2011

Welcome to the newly revamped SUBC website. This is just one of a few aspects of the club that have undergone a facelift over the past few months, as this year we are proud to announce that we will be working with our new sponsors at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Following on from several notable successes last season, it is hoped that this year will be a successful one on the water as well. Wins at many Scottish head races for both were capped by a win for the Men’s 2nd 4 at the Scottish Universities Championships, while the Men’s 8 posted the club’s best finish in 10 years at the Head of the River Race in London, one of the biggest and most venerable rowing races in the world. Meanwhile, the Women’s squad had its largest intake of new rowers in several years and also won medals at the Scottish Championships, along with a few podium finishes for good measure. This season should see the club active across Scotland and the UK once again, with a few trips south of the border already in the pipeline.

Of course, there’s only so much training and hard work we can do. The club is also very active socially, and arranges events all year, from the now legendary SUBC subcrawl to more relaxed post-training meals out. The club caters for all comers, whether you are an aspiring Olympian or are just looking to improve your fitness and try your hand at perhaps the most traditional and team-oriented of university sports.

PWC Sponsorship

The club this year have been lucky enough to get PWC on board as the primary sponsor.  Following a season without financial backing last year, this represents a fantastic opportunity for the club. PwC are already heavily involved in university rowing as the principal sponsor of the British Universities (BUCS) Regatta, and therefore we are privileged to have their support.

Funding from PwC will primarily be used to ensure that the club can continue to offer as many Strathclyde students as possible the chance to row, whilst of course making it as economical as possible. Unfortunately, this is never an easy thing to do in a sport where the asking price for new boats is routinely well into 5 figures. While the club currently possesses a fleet of 11 boats, the plan is to invest in new kit for the boathouse and in a new Cox-box to allow as many crews on the water as possible. Hopefully with continued support from our sponsors, we may yet be able to obtain a new boat sometime in the future, although this may still be some years off.
